The Art of Doing Nothing

I have read so many self-help books in my life. Do you like self-help books? I go in cycles. Sometimes I feel they are helpful, sometimes I feel they are useless and sometimes I feel they are literally life changing. I have read some great ones like Simple Abundance and some that didn't speak to me much, like Ekhart Tolle. I've read some controversial ones like Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsch and dare I say The Bible. And I've read some relatively stupid ones that shall remain nameless. My latest is Slow Love by Dominique Browning and so far, so good. She has a lovely, easy writing style that tells her story of losing herself after losing her job. I'm about 1/3 of the way thru and it is very enjoyable. As a mom who has lost myself occasionally in the raising of my children, I identify with her.
Now I'm always on the lookout for a new self help book that speaks to me because when they're good, they're very, very good. And right now I'm in the cycle of enjoying them and seeking some self awareness and improvement. I remember reading somewhere the phrase "the art of doing nothing". Sounded so intriguing and as I had a day like that today it reminded me to look into the subject. I found it online and hope it's a good read.
The art of doing nothing intrigues me. I'm used to feeling pretty crappy about myself when I spend a day doing nothing. But, lately I'm learning that those times are not only necessary, but sacred. Yesterday I was so busy, cleaning, taking care of the kids, doing laundry etc., I deemed it a "good" day. Today I slept in til 2 pm and proceeded to deem it a "bad" one. Why? I hadn't gone to bed til 3:30 the night before so it made sense that I would sleep late. Rhys was at his Gramma's, as he is every Tuesday, so I really had no serious obligations.
After rising I proceeded to pick up Nick, take him to Starbucks for an afterschool chat, pick up Noah and Alex, get their haircut, help with homework, do the dishes and a half hour or so of telephone "errands". I started to feel like the day was "valid" after all.
But, I didn't need to beat myself up about sleeping late. Apparently, at least according to what my body was telling me, it was needed. I have felt so burned out lately with fixing the house and everything that goes along with raising four boys that I really feel my mind needed it as well.
Louise Hay is one of my favorite self help authors. I won't go in to her life story but if you're looking for inspiration, you will find it there. I recently read an article on her Facebook page about being gentle with oneself. Accepting yourself as you are, at the exact place you are in life. Are you a little, or a lot, overweight? Ok. Are you broke? Are you in an unhappy marriage?, etc. Wherever you are, accept it, come to terms with it, dare I say~bless it... That's what Louise and other teachers, such as herself, instruct.
How freeing! So I slept in, big deal. I ate that donut when I was trying so hard to diet. You get the point. Start from where you are but not only that, bless where you are.
Just a subject I am thinking about today that I wanted to share with my friends. My readers, who I am so fortunate to even have. It has always been a dream of mine to write and share things with people that have transpired in my life that I feel may be of value to someone else. So, that's all. Just a random musing today that, for some reason, was on my heart. If it blesses you, wonderful. Obviously, I needed to write it. To get it off my chest. To somehow put out into the universe that I am ok with what I've done.
It's ok to be busy, but I think it's ok to equally have periods of doing nothing.  Maybe it's the way I was raised, or the country I live in that makes me feel well, weird just saying this. Maybe it's more of an Eastern philosophy. I'm not sure, but I know it feels right. I just brewed myself some iced green tea and took a hot shower. I think I will play around on Facebook or Pinterest, watch a program or just sit in the silence. Whatever I do I choose to deem it "good".

Little Changes

I've had the energy to putter lately and you know how it goes, changing one thing leads to changing another. But I'm having so much fun!! I just wanted to share a few little changes I've made.

I had this Windsor bench in the entry hall forever but when I decided to move the beautiful table my hubby made there I had to find the bench a new home. It works perfect in my kitchen. I added some pillows from the living room and hung this adorable sign I just purchased from The Old Lucketts Store

Hubby brought me this cute little sign from his roadtrip to Cleveland, I finally decanted my dish soap into a pretty glass bottle and replaced the ugly plastic art caddy for this awesome galvanized tin one from AntiqueFarmHouse

This is the table Tim built from wood from our farmhouse that was no longer suitable as flooring. It is so long and I had it filled with a ton of mercury glass votive holders and this tall, glass vase with branches but it just looked empty and unbalanced.

I found these large, ironstone vases at Target and snapped them up! I absolutely love them. I added the branches from the other vase into each one and it adds balance to the whole scene. I have to find something for the middle. I'm envisioning a cast iron urn and some moss balls, which I plan on making.

I think I have Spring fever and just feel like nesting. What a blessing to have a home to make pretty and enjoy with my family.

Prepping For Spring

Winter's time is running out!
I can't say I'm sad about that. I try to embrace Winter. I mean, I live in Pittsburgh, I have to ~ right?  I did my fair share of Winter decorating right after New Year's.
Fresh evergreens and pinecones and lots of candles. Throws everywhere, I even bought a cable knit lampshade.
Everything looked cozy and inviting. The weather is still so cold here but there are only four more weeks til Spring and I am planning to usher it in as never before! I have never been so ecxited to surround myself with fresh flowers again. I mean grocery store flowers are great but actually having a cutting garden is the best!
I'm ready to throw open the windows and watch the curtains blow in the breeze. I'm ready to see my perennial garden of coneflower, French lavender and Russian sage in full bloom. I'm ready to feel the sun on my face! I am quite sure I am Vitamin D deprived!! So for now I am cleaning and rearranging things in eager anticipation.
Simplifying things, getting rid of the things I don't need, want or use. Spring cleaning~what a wonderful thing. It is a time to refresh and renew and I am up for the challenge! I rearranged the accessories in my living room today, cleaned mirrors, wiped down the shelves in the bookcase. I moved my beautiful "Paris" tablerunner to a pretty new spot under a lamp with a rattan shade. I arranged all my mercury glass votives on the mantlepiece. I have so many now!! I'm so pleased with this sweet little collection and in my mind I see them overflowing with pink and white roses, peonies and fresh boxwood cuttings. The house smelling amazing.
I love putting all signs of Winter away. Bidding them a fond farewell and placing them in their proper storage until they are needed again.

Here's my front hallway as it was yesterday:

Winter filler under the cloche, a star anise wreath and that cable knit lampshade!

Switched out for Spring with some moss, twigs and speckled eggs under the cloche, some lamps transferred from the livingroom and a shabby vintage frame.

I would post pics of the living room but the boys have a friend over and it is video game central right now. Not super picture worthy.

I mentioned on my FB page a few weeks ago about our leaking bathroom pipe and the resulting damage to our entry ceiling. Here's a pic~

So that's on hubs' to do list today. In fact he's at HD right now.

Upstairs in the master I am repainting an armoire that was my oldest son's. It is halfway done... I was shooting for today but life gets in the way sometime!! Here is the before pic~
After hopefully revealed this week!

  Enjoy your Sunday!!! Melissa

The Boy That Almost Wasn't

This is a hard post to write. It's very personal and I've been debating whether or not I should share it. I mean I mostly focus on home decor but I definitely do talk about my family and things that are special in my life. I like sharing these things with my readers because I think honesty touches people's hearts. So, here goes.

By age 30 I had just given birth to my third little boy. I was tired and I felt that having a baby past the age of 30 wouldn't be a good idea. My mom was 36 when she had me and she was the "old mom" in our group. I always felt she was so out of touch and as a little child I was always afraid she would die lol. Since I didn't want to be the "old mom" I asked my husband to get a vasectomy. He agreed. The deal was done. After 8 years of infertility, one miscarriage and 3 healthy boys under the age of 6 I felt like we had done very well for ourselves and I thanked God for what I had been given.

Fast forward five years. I'm 35, I don't feel "old", in fact, I feel younger than I did at 30. Having a baby sounded like something I could do. I wasn't tired anymore. I had had a 5 year rest, well , you know what I mean. And above and beyond all these rationalizations was the plain old fact that I wanted a baby. Just one more, before I really was too old and possibly unable to conceive again.

I prayed, I pondered, I did internet research and then...I approached my husband with the idea of having his vasectomy reversed. He wholeheartedly agreed. Now, we live in a city known for it's fine hospitals but after finding a Dr. with a 95 percent success rate I asked the hubs to travel all the way to Minnesota. He agreed and spent a weekend in Minneapolis having the procedure and spending a day recovering. I had absolute faith in this Dr. and within 8 months we were pregnant.

I had horrible morning sickness with every baby and this was no exception so I was very sick all the time. Zofran saved my sanity!! It was the only way I could function. A few weeks after I found out I was pregnant I started bleeding. I was checked out and found that I had a massive hematoma in my uterus, the biggest they had seen. They feared for my baby's life and didn't think he would have enough room to grow. I cried all the way home from the sonogram, I mean uncontrollably. Then, out of the blue, I had this feeling that everything would be ok. I knew it was God and from then on, no matter how bad things got, and they got bad, I just kept believing. I had to be on modified bed rest and get an ultrasound every week or two. It was the scariest thing in the world.

One Saturday morning at 13 weeks, I woke to bleeding, vomiting and leaking fluid. I was sure my water had broken. Luckily my sister had spent the night and she took me to the hospital. Tim was at work. When I arrived, the Dr. said my water had probably broken and more than likely the baby was gone. I was devastated but I held on. Amazingly enough during the ultrasound, there he was, we saw his little heart beat.

I went home and rested and just took it one day at a time. It was so hard. At 34 weeks I became so ill. I was almost blacking out and seeing floaters. Funnily enough, the thing that made me go to the Dr. was a horrendous sore throat. At the end of my appointment, just as they were about to release me, I heard my Dr. gasp aloud. She hadn't looked at my blood pressure and the nurse never bothered to tell her how high it was. She didn't give me the number, just said that they needed to call an ambulance right then. My husband was with me and they told me if I could get to the hospital right then they would let me go on my own. We honestly thought it would be faster than waiting for the ambulance. We were there in a flash.

The Dr. checked me, left the room and when he came back he told me that I was extremely sick and that I would be having the baby that night. He checked the protein in my urine. He said a bad number was 300, a very bad number was 1,000. My levels were at 30,000. He said, in 25 years of practice he had never seen anyone with such bad pre eclampsia. They turned the lights off and the tv in my room so I wouldn't stroke out. My sister wasn't allowed in, only my husband. Pitocin was started even before they gave me bp meds because they had to start labor. My head was spinning. I've almost lost this baby a hundred times and if that Dr. hadn't checked my bp, which is crazy that they almost overlooked it, me and my baby could be dead.

The pitocin and epidural worked quickly, so quickly that the second my water broke, the baby started delivering himself. The Dr. was not around because they had no warning, it all happened so quickly. The nurse had to deliver my little man. It took him a while to cry and that was all I could focus on at first. But, since the baby was out and I had been given so much blood pressure medication, my BP plummeted to 43/20. The Dr. arrived and quickly called in two other Dr's and a team of nurses.

I started to lose my hearing. The Dr. explained that all my blood was leaving my extremities to keep my heart pumping. I kept passing out. I asked if I was going to die. My Dr's reply was simply, "I hope not".  After a lot of ammonia under my nose and meds to stabilize my bp I was ok once again. My husband was crying and almost passed out from the shock. My little guy was rushed to the NICU because he was having breathing problems.

I couldn't see or hold him till the next day. He was so tiny. 5 pounds, 3 oz. Almost half the size of two of my other boys. But, he was healthy and I was alive. I had to stay a day longer than usual and my baby was now only 4 pounds 9 oz. but he was cleared to go home. I have looked at him in wonder and amazement for 3 years now and even before that in his constant ultrasound pics. He's so big and healthy, he's incredibly bright and makes me laugh every day. In the end, God's promise of it all being ok came true. Little Rhys Patrick Owczarzak is going to be three years old in a few short weeks. A baby, that at age 30,I was sure I would never want. A huge change of my mind.  A post vasectomy miracle. He survived it all. The hematoma, the bed rest, the pre-eclampsia and crazy birth. To me and our family, he's the boy that almost wasn't. My little chubby faced, belly laughing, mommy loving miracle. They do happen, every day, and for us, it was a long succession of miracles. It's funny because he has this quality about him, this specialness, this "shine". I know it's there to remind me of everything I went through to bring this person into the world. And everything that he went through to get to me.

It's Almost Finished!!!! Total Kitchen Remodel Sneak Peek

Gah! I have so many projects going on here at once I'm not sure what to talk about!! Our kitchen is like 4 percent away from being done... I can't wait much longer. We have the range hood to install and a tiny bit more tiling, then painting the room and building the pantry door, then we are done!!
This was a total gutting to the original 1831 log foundation. I can't wait to share it with you!!! Here's a tiny sneak peek.

This is our inspiration for the pantry door. Via Pinterest

The tile floor my hubby installed

Gutting to the original locust log foundation and my super cute contractor, aka the hubs, who did the entire renovation himself. You can see the nasty old wallpaper and bare studded walls. That is where we installed the cooktop and tile backsplash (to be shown at the reveal!!)

The Compliment That Keeps on Giving

A parent dropped her son off for a sleepover recently and gave me a compliment that made me giddy. Wanna know what it was?  She said, "Wow you would never know you have even one dog much less 3."  "Your house never smells like dog!!" My little heart melted!  Is that weird?  It felt weird. Not that she said it, but how happy it made me and how I keep going back to it in my head.
I am, in my mind, a master at odor control around this place. Baking soda in the fridge and on the carpets, candles lit, fresh flowers, reed diffusers, sprays... I dab scented oils on my lightbulbs. I line my trash cans with fabric softener sheets and then the scented trash bag. As far as garbage disposal maintenance and running the "clean washer" cycle in the laundry room I am a champ. I've been known to be a bit picky about the kitty litter I choose. It has to be the really good smelling kind, multi cat only (I know I only have one cat) but you get the point. With 4 kids and 4 animals (6 if you count the fish), I am constantly worried about odor control. My sister says my house smells so good all the time but hey, it's my sister. I expect HER to say that! When this lady said it, it was like she asked me if I had lost ten pounds ;)

Super Sunday!

Happy Monday!! Welcome to new readers and thank you for being here!
Yesterday was a super day for a lot of people due to the Superbowl. To me it was super because it was super productive!! It seems we have been stuck in a rut here with getting any projects done but somehow yesterday fate stepped in and we were on a roll!
We printed up, framed and hung some of the black and white pics for our photo wall.  We will be adding to it as I find frames that I love as I don't want to fill up the space without much thought just to make it look "finished". I had a lot more hanging there but took it down because it just didn't look like "me". It looked rushed and crowded and kind of cheap.  I'm waiting for a cute, gold, letter "O" to come from Ballard and I'm sure I will find lovely things as I'm out and about. I usually find them when I'm not actively looking! For now it may look sparse but it is a good template to build on.

Our drop cloth curtains are hung and I love them! They washed and ironed beautifully and I love the way they drape. I just bought 3~  6' by 9' panels and used curtain clips to hang them from my existing rods. I spent $43.00 for the whole project. $27 for the panels and $21 for clips.

We hung my chalkboard from www.AntiqueFarmHouse.com in the kitchen above the desk.

And found the paint to fix the scratches in the living room. We cleaned the dining room floors and had a lovely Sunday dinner in there. We don't use it often enough and I plan on fixing that! New curtains, a fresh coat of paint and some pretty accessories will make it more inviting. We have such a pretty view of the backyard from that room, I really want to enjoy it more. And there's nothing like everyone sitting down together for a good meal and conversation. We are hoping to take out the windows in that room to replace them with French doors that will lead to a brick patio. Now that would really make it more inviting!!

Valentine Mantle Tutorial

Wow! The year is flying by and it's already time for hearts and flowers, pink, red and white. Well, that's what I think of when I think of Valentine's Day! With that in mind, I decorated my mantle accordingly.
It was a ton of fun and even better than I had hoped because Rhys got really into the process!! He was soooo cute!! He kept handing me heart cookie cutters and saying "Look Mommy it's just like you!" I guess when he sees hearts he thinks of me! <3

This was my design inspiration from Pinterest ~ Cute right?!

I was excited because I already had shiny, white yarn left over from Christmas, to string the hearts. I love finding a use for something I already have in my stash!

I purchased some beautiful paper that's double sided from Sugar Pink Boutique : one of my new loves!!! You must check them out if you craft or like I do~try!
Isn't it pretty?

I needed a template to make hearts because, well, just because. I wanted varying sizes and found these cuties tonight at Target <3

I traced varying sized hearts on the papers with the prettiest prints. I totally got my money's worth out of that paper!
I love the way some hearts have smooth edges and some have wavy ones~

I used a paper hole punch to make room for my yarn and strung on the hearts~

My super adorable little helper <3~

I even used the paper that I had cut the large hearts from as a "frame" for other paper I had left~

Like this~

I used the tiniest paper hearts left over to sprinkle in a silver tray~I'm thinking of stamping Valentine words and phrases on them~

I used alphabet rubber stamps and a brown paper tag from Sweet Plum Party! | Pick Your Plum

And I added faux berries from Sugar Pink Boutique~

 To make this~

I strung more hearts from pink polkadot ribbon lengthwise from the left vintage frame~
and from pompon garland on the right~
then added my "LOVE" banner from Robyn's Reverie~

I made some flowers from tissue paper~

 ~And the end result~

Thanks for visiting me and I wish you a Happy Valentine's Day!

The "Downside" of Having a Decor Blog!

I'm obsessed with decorating
And people tell me I'm good at it.
Naturally I should write a blog, right?
And I should have a FB page to go with it!
And I should check out everyone else's home decor FB pages right?
Naturally!
Wow! A lot of them are so incredibly talented!
Ooohh and a lot of them have online shoppes...
Yes...you heard that. That "dun dun dunnnn".
The sound of impending economic upheaval.
My wallet cringing.
But I have to support other fellow bloggers and small business owners I tell myself.
I have to get some extra goodies so I can take pics, for the blog~it's mostly for the blog.
My readers want to see new things, new ideas...
Yea, I have convinced myself.
So with credit card in hand I delve into the online boutiques and become entangled in a passionate affair with Etsy.
It's ok I tell myself. Someday I'll be featured in Country Living and I won't feel guilty about my purchases...Who am I kidding?~ I know I'd be buying the same amount of stuff even if I didn't have a blog.

But maybe Country Living better call soon...just to make me feel better ;-)

See that tiny pink blurb on the wreath on the left? That's the meagre beginning to my Valentine mantle. One tiny pink heart that I forgot to remove for the pic :)

"Nest" and bird pillows from gracioushome

And these are the scratches in my paint that I uncovered when I moved the mirror further down the wall. It just looks soooo much better there, I tell my hubby. And the search for the perfect paint to match begins. All in the name of progress!

My "Paris" table runner from www.tickingandtoile.com yes it needs ironed, shhh.
